Dispatch/Communications

Our Communications Center is more than a typical 9-1-1 intake and ambulance dispatch center.  While the ambulance is on the way to you, the dispatchers are providing in essence a zero-minute response time.  Instead of holding pressure on a wound or providing CPR directly, they skillfully instruct bystanders how to do these things over the phone.

Our team of medical professionals operate under the medical direction of the Muskogee County Emergency Service Medical Director, Dr. Gary Lambert.

We are located in the consolidated Muskogee City-County 911 Center. This allows our dispatchers to have improved and faster communications and coordination between multiple agencies.

Team

Our team members are required to maintain IAED (International Academies of Emergency Dispatch) Certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher. We employ approximately 14 Emergency Medical Dispatchers, including Emergency Medical Responders, Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics, plus a full-time transfer coordinator. We are staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

As a team, our dispatchers are responsible for managing the deployment of 20+ ambulances and multiple special event units. Our dispatchers are also responsible for locating, triaging, and providing medical self-help instructions using the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) protocols. An international standard, these protocols have been translated in 19 languages, and are used around the world. The protocols allow us to walk callers through childbirth, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, EpiPen administration, airway management, and many other lifesaving interventions.

Equipment

We utilize technology including New World Computer Aided Dispatch software, CallWorks 911 phone system, Motorola 800 MHz Elite radio systems, geo-location software, and text-to-911 services.

If English is not the caller’s primary language, we are able to conference third party interpreters for any language around the world.  We are also able to connect with the deaf community via Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD).

Accredited Center of Excellence

In 2000, MCEMS Communications became one of the first in Oklahoma, and the 41st Internationally Accredited Center of Excellence. This year marks our 8th accreditation, a spectacular achievement only 9 other agencies in the world have achieved!  Accredited centers share a common goal of improving public care and maximizing the efficiency of 911 centers. The International Academies of Emergency Dispatch have established a high standard of excellence for emergency dispatch, and has provided the tools to achieve this high standard through certification at the dispatcher level, and at the communications center level through the accreditation program.
